Britney Spears Magazine Analysis

This is a magazine cover with an image of Britney Spears when she was 17 years old. The image has been framed for Britney to be perfectly in the centre and has cropped out her legs so that her torso part of her body fits in well. It is a medium long shot. This shot is used so that her body is clearly seen, her stomach, cleavage and legs. Britney is wearing underwear and a baggy shirt which is a big attraction to men. It suggests a promiscuous attitude of herself towards the audience. This is much more appealing to men as her body is a top attraction towards men. There are two props, her phone and the telly tubby doll. The doll can be seen as a sign of innocence to Britney’s promiscuous side. But also makes her seem quite childish which can be a bit of a turn off to older men. The innocent side of her is also an appeal towards men. The phone gives another idea of her being prerogative, as it looks as if she is part of a sex chat line. Especially as she is lying on her bed in underwear and her facial expression looks quite sexual as she is pouting her lips. The connotations of the setting where Britney is links to her prerogative side once again. A bed is a symbol of sexuality. An intertextual reference of this picture is the doll ‘Tinky winky’. It is a reference to a TV programme of Telly Tubbies. The child-like toy backs up her natural audience, which are children, although it could refer to the TV shows subliminal messages and how Britney also has subliminal messages, and these subliminal messages are sexual. The main colour used is Pink. Pink is a symbol of girlyness to link back to her innocence as she is only seventeen.

This is another magazine cover of Rolling Stone with an image of Britney Spears when she has begun to grow up. This image has been framed to show the parts of her body that attract the intended audience (mostly men). The image has been cropped just below her bottom, so everything is fitted in perfectly. The image is a medium long shot. This shot has been used so the audience can see her facial expression and body language. Britney is wearing nothing but knickers. This is to reveal her figure to the viewers which gives a prerogative sense, but more than the first image. As in the first she is wearing a bra and knickers, in this she has only got knickers on. She is holding a shirt and pressing it against the wall with her chest, the shirt is to cover her modesty as she doesn’t want to give too much away to the readers to give a sense of wonder (of what she really looks like). Her direct mode of address shows she wants a close relationship to the reader. She is showing she has a confident act and that she’s trying to pull the male audience in. The setting used is a plain white background to give a sense of purity, also her underwear is white and the shirt she is pressing up against is also white. So everything is matching. The lighting is producing shadows and glows on her body. The colours used are white and purple; obviously her skin colour stands out the most to attract the reader. White is once again to symbol part of her purity and innocence.

This is another cover of Britney Spears for Rolling Stones magazine. This image has been chosen to attract the reader differently (using her eyes). A direct mode of address grabs the audience into the magazine world. This image is to show her facial expression, which is quite wide-eyed and pouted lips (another sexual image using just her eyes and mouth). But also quite tearful. The use of black and white is significant. The image has been cropped perfectly so that her facial expression is seen extremely well. The relationship Britney is asking from the audience is to listen to her story carefully, she seems to look quite tearful and a little upset. This is supported by the anchorage text ‘BRITNEY SPEARS inside an American tragedy’. Tragedy shows that something disastrous has happened to Britney and her tearful eyes matches this anchorage well.
